Fireplace Safety Tips to Protect Your Monmouth County Home
Home fire safety is essential and even more so if you own a fireplace. It’s a nice feeling to curl up in front of a warm fire during the fall and winter seasons, but it’s a nicer feeling to know you’re safe. Whether you have a wood-burning, gas, or electric fireplace, use these fireplace safety tips to protect your Monmouth County home.
The first and foremost thing you need to do is get your fireplace professionally cleaned and chimney sweeped. Having a professional come to your Holmdel home to get rid of any debris will help prevent house fires and allow you to light fires without excess smoke. While they’re there - it’s also important that they look out for any sneaky animals that made their way in.
Other fire prevention tips include:
- Cracking open a window while the fire is burning
- Being sure the damper or flue is open before lighting or starting a fire
- Making sure all embers have completely stopped burning when you’re heading to bed or leaving your home
- Check the damper by looking up into the chimney with a flashlight
- Use smaller pieces of dry and well-aged wood and avoid wet or green wood, which causes more smoke and soot buildup in the chimney
- When cleaning a fireplace, remove ashes from previous fires, keeping levels of the ash to 1 inch or less
- Make sure the area around the fireplace is clear of anything that is potentially flammable
- Never leave a fire unattended
- Home fireplace safety should include keeping a fire extinguisher on hand
