Prepare for 2021 Hurricane Season
4/6/2021 (Permalink)
The hurricane season in New Jersey starts in June. Are you and family prepared? We’ve compiled a list of tips to follow before the storms hit, especially for those whose homes are in high-flood areas.
Step 1: Make an emergency plan.
Your family may not be together if a disastrous storm strikes, so it’s important to know what you’ll each do when it does. Start by asking some important questions to create an easy-to-follow emergency plan.
- How will you receive hurricane warnings?
- What is your shelter plan?
- Do you have an evacuation route and meeting place?
- How will the family/household communicate?
Step 2: Consider specific needs and duties.
When forming your hurricane plan, discuss specific responsibilities and decide who can assist with communication, childcare, pets, dietary and medical needs, and more. Keep a list of important resources, contact numbers, and supplies in a safe and accessible space.
Step 3: Practice your plan with your family/household.
Once you have a general plan created, it’s a good idea to practice with your family. Much like a fire drill in school, follow the steps you’ve outlined in your plan and have each member answer questions that may arise in a real-world situation.
