Cliffwood, NJ - What type of person willingly puts their life on the line for a stranger, runs towards danger rather than away from it, and is at their best when you're at your worst? If you answered "superhero," you're close, but superheroes are fictional characters who exist in movies and comic books. In real life, these people are first responders, and like their fictional counterparts, many of them walk amongst us, undetected and unappreciated until you really need them.
This is exactly why the United States Senate passed a resolution back in 2017 to designate October 28th as National First Responders Day - a day set aside to raise awareness of these unsung heroes who are often volunteers, and to recognize and appreciate the sacrifices they make for their communities. First responders include firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians (EMT), paramedics, and 911 operators.
SERVPRO Team Harvey, a collective property restoration franchise that serves the state of New Jersey, including their operating territories in the Aberdeen/Holmdel, Hoboken/Union City, and West Somerset County areas of New Jersey, understands firsthand how essential first responders are to their communities because its technicians and project managers regularly come into direct contact with them during mitigation jobs caused by fires, floods, storm events, and other disasters that affect commercial properties and homes.
"Our local first responders are the first on the scene in times of crisis and emergency, and SERVPRO Team Harvey wants them to know how much we appreciate their sacrifice and commitment. Often, the very people saving lives are our neighbors, friends, and family members. This National Day of Gratitude serves to remind us of their selfless, heroic, around the clock service. We are deeply grateful for all they do," said Lance Harvey, President and owner of SERVPRO Team Harvey.
SERVPRO Team Harvey seized the opportunity afforded by this day to deliver thank you bags to local volunteer firehouses throughout northern Monmouth County. These firehouses included Cliffwood, Aberdeen, Holmdel, Hazlet, Keansburg, Union Beach, and Keyport.
"SERVPRO Team Harvey took a grass roots outreach approach by going from firehouse to firehouse, introducing ourselves to the first responders we had the privilege to meet along the way, and thanking them face to face. This approach is in the spirit of the company's mission to always maintain a community focus," said Harvey.
On a national level, SERVPRO partnered with First Responders Children's Foundation (FRCF) to host an event highlighting exceptional bravery in New York's Time Square on October 24. And throughout the year, SERVPRO sponsors events in support of first responders, such as the First Responder Bowl, which will take place in Dallas on December 26th.
As one of the most dangers jobs in the country, National First Responders Day also pays tribute to fallen first responders. According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live, and according to the CDC, 97 firefighters and 155 police officers die each year in the line of duty.
Even though National Firs Responder's Day has come and gone, it's never too late to take a moment to tahnk your local first responders for their commitment to protecting you and your safety.
"These dedicated individuals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line. SERVPRO Team Harvey encourages everyone to stop by their local fire hall, police station, or EMS facility and say 'thank you' to your local first responders," said Harvey.
SERVPRO Team Harvey is an independently owned and operated emergency services company located throughout New Jersey. When disaster strikes, commercial facilities, homeowners, business owners, and insurance companies can rely on SERVPRO Team Harvey to make it "like it never even happened."
